Repeat prescriptions are issued at the discretion of the doctor for patients with a stable medical condition. Patients may order in the following ways:

• Online via the link at the top of this page (new users need to register for the service first)
• In person/by post - we are happy to post the prescription to you if you include a stamped addressed envelope with the request.

In order to avoid errors, all requests must be in writing (we are not prepared to accept telephone requests unless in emergency situation).

We must ask for 48 hours notice for a repeat prescription as each has to be checked and signed by the relevant doctor.

Medication Reviews

The doctor may ask for a surgery of telephone consultation for your medication review. It is in your own interest and safety for you to attend these medication reviews if you have not done so within the last 3 to 6 months. It is unlikely that a prescription will be repeated if the patient has not been seen within this time period.

Prescriptions Charges and Exemptions

Extensive exemption and remission arrangements protect those likely to have difficulty in paying charges (NHS prescription and dental charges, optical and hospital travel costs).

The NHS prescription charge is a flat-rate amount which successive Governments have thought it reasonable to charge for those who can afford to pay for their medicines. Prescription prepayment certificates (PPCs) offer real savings for people who need extensive medication.

NHS charges

These charges apply in England only. In Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales prescriptions are free of charge.

• Prescription (per item): £9.65
• 12-month prepayment certificate (PPC): £111.60
• 3-month PPC: £31.25

If you will have to pay for four or more prescription items in three months, or more than 15 items in 12 months, you may find it cheaper to buy a PPC.
